SEO professionals have been using press releases since the dawn of internet marketing. SEO folks would just create a press release, get it distributed, and then sit back and relax as their site picked up thousands of backlinks and started to rank for the keywords that they were optimizing their releases for.
Of course, like any other great technique that’s been discovered or invented, the press release distribution model started to get abused to the point of exploitation. In an already cluttered web, these mass press releases that were being distributed just for SEO purposes were creating too much noise, to the point that something had to be done.
